What are your thoughts on Laos-Vietnam relations?

To mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations (5/9/1962-5/9/2022) and the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam- Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (18/7/1977-18/7/2022), Vientiane Times asked for opinions on the strong bonds between Laos and Vietnam.

Ms Phaeng Chanthavong, a retired government official in Luang Prabang province: Laos and Vietnam have a long-standing relationship, with strong bonds of friendship and historical cooperation. The two countries enjoy a strong friendship, a special solidarity and all-round cooperation through their parties and governments. These ties were strengthened during the revolutionary struggle for liberation. The relationship developed into a very close bond and was the ultimate reason for the success of the revolutionary movement, and today underpins the ties between Laos and Vietnam. Everyone should recognise and celebrate this special relationship and help to maintain it for as long as possible.

Mr Vilaiseng Heuangmixay, a government official in Xaythany district, Vientiane: Laos and Vietnam enjoy a special friendship and the two countries cooperate in all spheres. This creates the conditions that lead to continuing shared cultural and economic development. A photo exhibition has been organised to reflect these strong ties, which persist today in the mission of national defence and development, as well as depicting the determined efforts of revolutionary leaders in the past. The exhibition is also educational for young people, as it gives them a clear idea of the origins of the two countries’ cooperation and close ties, and will inspire loyal successors to protect and grow this bond into a long-lived and fruitful future. The younger generations in Laos and Vietnam should learn about these fine traditions and continue them together in the future.

Ms Tina Vongkham, a student in Sisattanak district, Vientiane: I have learnt about the special relationship, friendship and solidarity that exists between Laos and Vietnam and the peoples of our two nations. I feel that this relationship is very important and should continue. It’s good that our forebears developed this special relationship and that successive leaders have further strengthened the ties that bind Laos and Vietnam. Today we are close friends and brothers and will always remember and value our mutual assistance, both in the past and in the present time. The people of Laos and Vietnam were united in fighting for independence, democracy and liberation, and today help each other on the path to socio-economic development. We have a deep respect for each other and share so much on so many levels.
Ms Misouk Souksavath, a businesswoman in Chanthabouly district, Vientiane: I’m very pleased to attend the opening of this photo exhibition today because it’s an important and meaningful event that celebrates the special relationship between Laos and Vietnam. As we can see, the photos reflect our strong bonds of friendship, and the historical links between the two parties, governments, and peoples, which laid the cornerstone for the strong solidarity that we enjoy today. Together we are moving forward to prosperity. Of course, this special relationship should be nurtured and maintained, for the benefit of successive generations. Young people should learn about the ties that bind our two countries and their origins, so that they are inspired to preserve our close links for all time.
