Mrs Nonglack Mahathai explains the manufacture of medicines at the Boten Elemento Pharma factory.

Boten pharmaceutical factory steps up production

The Boten Elemento Pharma factory, which opened last year in the Boten Special Economic Zone in Luang Namtha province, is producing medication for use in the treatment of diabetes, cancer and Covid-19.
The factory has been given GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) certification, which impose regulations to ensure the safety and integrity of medicines produced.
The facility manufactures more than 20 types of high-quality medication.
Head of the factory’s Production Department, Mrs Nonglack Mahathai, said the facility was built in 2020 as part of China’s One Belt, One Road initiative. It covers an area of 1,500 square metres and has investment capital of 6.25 billion kip.
The factory complies with international standards of production, operates efficiently, and can turn out 100 million tablets and 70 million capsules annually, which are sold in Laos and in other countries.
The modern machinery installed in the factory can produce 300,000-500,000 pills per hour. This means that only 20 employees are needed to run the facility, comprising 15 Lao nationals and five Chinese.
The factory supports economic growth in the area in line with the principles of the One Belt, One Road strategy, and has paid the requisite taxes owed to the Lao government.
The Laos-China Railway will further facilitate business operations in Laos by enabling the rapid transport of goods, including imported raw materials, and is strongly supported by the Lao government.
In the future, the Boten Elemento Pharma factory plans to produce more medicines for the treatment of common illnesses in Laos and other countries in Southeast Asia.
